The narrative follows Nora Stephens, a cutthroat, fiercely successful New York literary agent who is fully aware that she is not the typical romance heroine. In fact, she knows she is the exact archetype of the “cold, big-city career woman” who gets dumped in the first ten minutes of a Hallmark movie so the male lead can find true love with a baker in a small town. The only person Nora softens for is her younger sister, Libby.
When a pregnant Libby begs her to take a month-long summer trip to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina—a sleepy town from one of Nora’s authors’ best-selling novels—Libby maps out a classic “small-town transformation” checklist for Nora. Libby wants her to wear flannel, date a local doctor, and become the plucky heroine of her own story.
Instead of a charming country doctor, however, Nora immediately runs into her urban work nemesis: Charlie Lastra, a brooding, hyper-critical, and brilliantly sharp Manhattan book editor. The two have a messy, deeply un-cute professional history back in the city.
