Step into the charming, witty, and deeply moving world of The Correspondent, Virginia Evans’ sensational, award-winning debut novel. Written entirely through a decade of letters and emails sent between 2012 and 2022, the story follows Sybil Van Antwerp a sharp, cantankerous, and fiercely independent septuagenarian living alone in Annapolis. A retired lawyer and chief clerk, Sybil stubbornly clings to her lifelong habit of physical correspondence, firing off missives to family, work associates, customer service lines, and even literary icons like Joan Didion.
As the letters unfold, we see a rich portrait of a woman navigating the complexities of aging, a changing body, complicated adult family dynamics, and unresolved grief from her past. When a DNA kit opens up unexpected questions about her birth parents and mysterious notes start arriving regarding an old legal case, Sybil is pushed into a profound, late-in-life transformation. Equal parts laugh-out-loud funny and profoundly tender, The Correspondent is an unforgettable epistolary masterpiece about human frailty, forgiveness, and the enduring power of the written word.
